ROLLER (REVOLVER) CANCELLATIONS
As far as I can ascertain, Liverpool had three Roller cancellations only the first of which is shown in the Kirkwood Proof Books.
Type 1
Proof entry circa July 1856
Proof entry circa December 1856
Characteristics: A continuous series of marks similar to the English 1844 postmark for Liverpool
Proofed: circa July 1856 and again circa December 1856
EKD: 16th May 1857 (only one dated copy has been reported)
LKD: 16th May 1857
Scarcity Rating: H (very few recorded)

Type 2
Characteristics: The above image amply shows these. It has been suggested elsewhere that this cancel was used for telegraphic purposes. I have not seen any documentary evidence to substantiate this but firstly all examples that I have seen have been on higher value stamps (see Picture Gallery) and secondly I do not believe any dated examples have been seen.
