SCOTTISH EXPERIMENTAL DUPLEX CANCELLATIONS
Greenock had two Types although, looking at the dates of use, it is quite likely that Type 2 is a recut of Type 1 albeit this is not mentioned in the Proof Books
Characteristics: The ‘normal’ experimental design with four short bars each side of ‘163’. However, the top right small bar was obviously faulty from day 1 as it does not show on any of the examples I have seen (or extremely faint)
Proofed: 3rd January 1856
EKD: 7th January 1856
LKD: 1st December 1856 (although SPG state having seen 8th December 1856)
Months of Use:
Known Codes:
Scarcity Rating: E /F (Scarce/Rare)
Characteristics: Similar to Type 1 except that there are six bars to the left of ‘163’ and five to the right albeit the third right bar is more of a dot than a bar and is missing in later impressions. There is a constant break in both arcs just below the ‘1’ in the year and, unlike Type 1, the Code letter is at the top rather than at the bottom
Proofed: 21st December 1856
EKD: 6th May 1857 (although SPG state having seen 13th April 1857)
LKD: 18th November 1859 (although SPG state having seen 19th November 1859)
Months of Use:
Known Codes:
Scarcity: C (Average). An example dated 13th May 1857 has been seen in BLUE which is RARE
